10 Security Tips to Follow If You Live Alone!

Whatever you are moving into your first apartment after college, moving into a new home after a divorce, or relocating for your dream job, living alone can be a transition that takes time to adjust to. One of the most important factors in successfully surviving on your own is to make sure your residence is safe and secure. Security is especially important for women who stay alone! Read on for easy ways to make your residence less susceptible to property crime, and inherently safer for its dwellers.

  • Do not mark your mailbox with a single name, especially if you are a woman. This is a very obvious clue that you live alone, and therefore are an easy target for break-ins.
  • Get to know your neighbors, at least a little. This will help you familiarize yourself with the surroundings and allow you to exchange phone numbers in case of an emergency.
  • · Keep windows and doors locked at all times. Use the peephole before opening the door, and ask for proper identification for anyone claiming to be in uniform. If the home or apartment does not have a peephole, install one.
  • Ensure the parking area is well-lit. If it is a drive-way, install motion detection lights. If you live in an apartment, inspect the outside of the building for lighting and request more if it is insufficient.
  • Install a home security system . Police suggest a property that is protected by a home security system is two to three times less likely to be burglarized than a property without one. The investment is worth the added safety!
  • Connect a telephone in the bedroom that way in case of an emergency the phone is easily accessed by the bedside or keep your cell phone handy
  • If you or a loved one is a bit older, you might consider including the life alert program in your home security system. The life alert program can automatically alert for help if you have fallen or become injured.
  • Consider owning a pet, especially a dog. It will help ease the transition into living alone by offering companionship, and can also act as an alarm system for any intruders!
  • Change your locks when you move into a new home or apartment. You do not know where the other sets of keys could be circulating!
  • Lastly, do not go inside if there are obvious signs of a break-in. Leave the promises and immediately call for help.
